Asterion ~ an Atlan (see also Labyrinth), the youngest child of the Atlan who would subsequently take the name Hades, brother of Zeus. Prince Asterion was undergoing his Meta breakthrough at the time when he came through the portal fleeing into the past. Whatever blocked meta-abilities from manifesting in the past warped him, changing and morphing his body into the cruel joke of a form that resembled a man-bull hybrid while denying him any power other than his inherited immortality. The transformation, combined with whatever Meta-barrier existed in the past, left the boy in constant, intense pain (something similar to a Silver Stormer), Due to his young age at the time, he had never had his DNA stored, so a resurrection cradle could only ever transfer him back into his current pain-filled form.
As an adult he elected to spend much of his time away from his kin, who either feared his uncontrolled outbursts of anger or pitied him. Spent time amongst humanity as the God Hapi and later Apis, but he found their worship unfulfilling, and his pain made him lash out and kill for no reason. Made his way to Crete and settled there as their God in the reign of Crete’s first king, Asterion I. Subsequently King Minos and Queen Pasiphae, in order to avoid sacrificing their daughter to him, poisoned their God and caused him to fall unconscious, since his golden blood prevented him from dying. His father, Hades threatened to destroy them if they tried again to kill his son, but suggested they imprison him until he learnt to control his blood rage. Daedalus designed that prison, the Labyrinth.
Theseus eventually slew the Minotaur in the Labyrinth, and Asterion’s body lay abandoned there until Hades stole it back and returned it to Asclepius, demanding he transferred Asterion’s last recording of his consciousness into a clone of his dead son. The process took years to achieve, and the recording was partly corrupted to begin with. It was also partly the cause of the war between Hades and Zeus and the reason that the Atlan ‘Gods’ withdrew from human contact, as such actions left them exposed and open to attacks by Hades and his inhuman allies.
Asterion however elected to turn his anger against Daedalus, who had made his prison, the Labyrinth. At one point he even recruited Icarus, the son of Daedalus, in that struggle; but he elected to remain neutral in the war raging between his aunt Zeus and his father, Hades. By the time that the Roman Empire began to rise, Asterion had adopted the Latin name of Taurus and had formed a secret society that sought to control humanity covertly. During the reign of Julius Caesar, around the time he was appointed dictator perpetuo. He seemed to vanish. He wasn’t resurrected by his father as he no longer had access to a cradle, for only the Council of the Gods had them now. There were however rumours though throughout the millennia that he’d survived, and indeed he re-emerged again in 1920.
In the 1920’s and 30’s Taurus ruled over a secret society of criminals he named the Labyrinth, only to vanish again during the war years. John Bull of the Crown Guard resembled Taurus but he died during the war. Taurus returned in 1946 to rebuild the Labyrinth, this time having recruited the Dollman, an erstwhile companion of Daedalus. back to a life of crime. He fought a secret war against Daedalus until the 50’s when everything went quiet again.
Athena ~ an Atlan
Atlan ~ Time travelling Meta refugees from the 27th Century who established a sanctuary for themselves back in the ancient past. Apparently obsessed with humanity, they fought for them against the Ancients and then against the ancient race known as the Serpent people. The Atlans, other than the occasional ‘stray’ like Athena, vanished just before the Dark Ages. Athena says they elected to ‘go beyond’ and certainly didn’t want to be around in the era leading up to the Meta persecutions that had caused them to flee in the first place. Those that stayed behind stopped playing gods for the most part. Their Meta-powers had become erratic during the last two millennia, something they suspected that Hades’ allies, the Baelim and the Annu, had done before they were banished.
Bōryokudan clans ~ Tokyo-based yakuza, linked to Labyrinth. Possibly behind the Kaiju attacks in Japan.
Cannon ~ metahuman working for Labyrinth (#80)
Carpathian Connection ~ They are developing biological super weapons (hybrids like Young Sam) for use against Terminus in the future.
Daedalus ~ A homo immortalus activated by an alien goddess, a short, stocky man with unkempt hair and beard and piercing eyes, the original designer of the Minoan labyrinth that imprisoned the Minotaur. No meta powers, just an incredible intellect and possible immortality. He was forced to steal a resurrection cradle from the Atlan after his son Icarus died attacking Ra’s Sun Palace which he used to resurrect his son. Fought alongside Max’s grandfather and the remaining Crown Guard to stop the first Terminus attack.
Damien Dalton ~ a billionaire business man with uncertain ethics and interests in arms-manufacture; the legally-estranged father of Bethany who (independently wealthy) is the sponsor of The Balance. He is no friend to The Balance, who have opposed and sabotaged some of his schemes, but who have also rescued him on a number of occasions and were responsible for having him cured of a brain-worm. When asked about Labyrinth, he admitted to knowing about them but stated he wasn’t involved with them or any criminal organisation for that matter.“I know who they are, and so long as their interests do not conflict with mine, I will normally pay them the courtesy of a polite audience. They must know of my ambition to prepare the planet for a possible future alien invasion. It is well known after the death of my wife in the Terminus attack back in 2009.” However he has been involved in operations with Labyrinth in-put.
DNAscendant ~ The DNAscendant procedure apparently consists of a genetic manipulation process that can change a mundane homo-sapien into a meta-human or force a Breakthrough in anyone with a suppressed meta-gene. Although not illegal to participate in the Process itself, it has a high mortality rate and can reduce any surviving subjects’ lifespan by up to thirty years apparently. Illegal bodyshops offering the process exist throughout America, Europe and the Indian continent, connected withboth Labyrinth and CrimeNett. Both organisations provide the DNAscendant procedure yet both seemed very different based on survivor’s description of the processes. It was a long, often difficult process and the results were apparently extremely unpredictable (#64).

Hades ~ an Atlan, father of Asterion. He requested that his son’s consciousness be transferred into someone else’s clone ~ as Daedalus did for his son Icarus ~ but the request was refused by the Council, which drove Hades to rebel and become the Hades we know, in an age-long conflict with Zeus.

Labyrinth ~ An organisation, a symbol, and its mythical leader, Taurus, whose main operational agent is M/The Professor. Apparent aim ~ to eliminate Silver Stormers, by means violent or not, claiming that they form a fifth column acting for Terminus; designed initially to weaken Earth by ensuring the majority of meta-human breakthroughs are psychotic and uncontrollable. Then when the control bugs take them over, they become the Terminus’ advance army. Powered, controlled, disposable.
Has a process called DNAscendant that can apparently give mundanes powers or dramatically boost existing meta-abilities. At least one of the winners of the reality show Britain’s Got Meta-Talent had undergone the process, the topless page 3 model Tracy Willis, occasionally referred to as UK Patriot. She’d been a mediocre meta at the start of the contest and after winning had gained a massive boost in powers. Rumour was that she’d undergone this DNAscendant process as part of her prize (Tin-Hat Tommy).
It has a number of ties to the international criminal underworld, such as handling the shipment and upgrading of weapons and personal services to mercenary units around the world. They are a secretive, world-wide consulting criminal resource run by a hidden cabal. They employ the Foundry apparently as a front for their thefts and more blatant activities. Involved in the theft of OmniTech power suits while the Balance battled Mekha-Prime (#46).

M/The Professor ~ The most visible leader of Labyrinth, a man in a full face mask with the Labyrinth logo on the forehead and unadorned armour (#8). Has found a way to block the kairomone signals that attract the control parasites to Silver Stormers and prevent the meta-breakthroughs becoming psychotic. (A simple treatment of lithium and zinc compounds at the right concentrations as a gas is successful 72.37% of the time.) Claims not to be the enemy of Earth, but of Terminus.
New Knights ~ a troop of power-armoured (non-Meta) super-heroes, modelling themselves on King Arthur and his court, sponsored and engineered by M/The Professor, who focus their efforts on suppressing and demeaning Silver Stormers.
Silver Stormers ~ Those affected by the Silver Storm. Meta-humans created by the Silver Storm produce a chemical signal, kairomones, that attracts the Terminus control bugs to bring them into the comfort and control of the creatures hive mind.M/The Professor has found a way to block the kairomone signals that attract the control parasites to Silver Stormers and prevent the meta-breakthroughs becoming psychotic. (A simple treatment of lithium and zinc compounds at the right concentrations as a gas is successful 72.37% of the time.) (#8) They weren’t around when the first Terminus attack arrived on the 30th of December 1976, nor for the second assault over Wessex in 2009. The first silver storm we know about occurred over a hundred years after Metas appeared officially, on the 7th of Feb 2012 but then how would they know what a silver storm was in 1909?
Spartacorp ~ Major arms-developer, CEO, Alexander M. Helmes, possibly works with criminals, perhaps even with Labyrinth (#77)
Tempus ~ A time-traveller, who returned from the future to kidnap his former self, Chrono, a founder-member of The Balance, who has not been seen since. Claims to be working for Labyrinth,forwhich he says he “has no choice”. When compelled to state the best way to defeat Labyrinth said “You’d be best to kill me…” There aren’t any police or META records of anyone who either looked like Tempus or had his specialist skill set (Inspector Marcus Tolliver).
Terminus ~ Inter-dimensional conquerors who once established in a paraverse, enslave the people, strip-mine the planet leaving it barren and lifeless then, having established a foothold in this parallel, move on to the next planet and the next; a dimensional cancer with the resources of numerous other parallels to call on. Even their dead continue to serve their ruler, zombified soldiers; warriors without fear – or individual thought. A threat even the Ziru Sirka are afraid of.
An attack on Earth was fought off on the 30th of December 1976 and then again over Wessex in 2009. Neither had Silver Stormer involvement. In 2009 London Watch was joined by the Nouveaux Chevaliers de Paris to defend the city of London whilst Bundesgarde joins the Protectors and Aontacht Eire in attacking the invading forces coming through breaches across the rest of the country. The Wessex Warriors were decimated trying to protect Wessex from the attack by Omega-drones and Omega-Destroyers. A Probot, a giant robot, materialised at what is now the Claremont Academy Facility and was defeated by teachers and a group of meta-human students who made sure all the breaches were sealed, preventing further troops coming through. The school was badly damaged during the attack and had to be rebuilt.
There will be an invasion-attempt in at least one alternate future (visited by The Balance #42). Fought off thanks to the technological competition between several tech companies worldwide which had accumulated a stockpile of powered armour, a situation that was engineered by ‘M’, using Labyrinth and the Foundry. Most of the suits will be based on the designs for Omniweapon and Partisan armour. The New Knights will open up all of the hidden warehouses. When the Silver Storm is unleashed and a lot of potentials undergo sudden breakthrough the fifth columnists have already been identified and their control bugs secretly removed. Thanks to ‘M’, the Terminus never manage to establish their ‘Conversion Towers’ but then as the enemy focused on exterminating Metas, he was equipping humanity for survival.
Damien Dalton had built an army of meta’s in preparation for the invasion. They were taken out in the first few weeks, and when Terminus unleashed the first wave of control bugs Earth was ready for them, stopped them controlling the Metas, though Dalton’s meta-army fell because he refused to work with ‘M’.
Terminus technology had no immunity to magic. Many of the mages, from both sides of the divide came together with some meta-mystical monsters created apparently in Carpathia and together with armoured soldiers began to push them back through that hole in reality, before they could get properly established. Seemed those who had magic in their blood couldn’t be controlled properly by the mind-slugs nor could the hybrids.
The victory was compromised when the Library formed an alliance with other mages who then allied with the Vampire Clans to drive the Terminus out. Vampires also couldn’t be taken over by the control parasites and were immune to most Terminus attacks so they were free to fight back alongside armoured mortals. Once the war was over the Court of Shadows aided by the Vampires turned on the Library and most of the remaining heroes so they could take control over the human survivors.
Totally Metal Krewe ~ mercenaries, Spartacorp upgrades have been discovered in their suits, with no links to account for the sale or theft of the upgrades. Most of the upgrades appeared to be prototypes that weren’t yet publicly available.
Victoria Pryde ~ CEO of Siren Beauty and the founder of the Pryde Foundation with its associated Pryde Institute for Troubled meta-Teens; the PITT. A dark haired, green-eyed woman with a national profile. Has been known to transform into some sort of cyborg with metal scales and implanted blades (#15). Has links to Labyrinth. Once tried to kidnap Bethany Dalton, in association with Damien Dalton.
Zeus ~ an Atlan, the shape-changing sister of Hades; both immortal and powered = Homo Deus.
Superhero Adventures, UK Style
